Anaïs Nin

Anaïs Nin, born in France in 1903 to Cuban parents, was a cosmopolitan author who spent her life moving between Europe and the United States. The daughter of the composer Joaquín Nin and the classically trained singer Rosa Culmell, she lived in Spain and Cuba during her youth, spent sixteen years in Paris, and lived the second half of her life in America. Writing in French, Spanish, and English, Nin became an established novelist, essayist, and short story writer. She spent her final decades in Los Angeles, California, where she died in 1977, leaving behind a rich collection of literary works that challenged the conventions of her era.

Nin is best known for her extensive journals, which she began writing at the age of eleven and kept until her death. Published in nineteen volumes, these diaries detail her private thoughts, personal relationships, and encounters with prominent artists. Nin is also celebrated as one of the first Western women to write and publish erotic literature. Her literary career began in earnest with her first book, a 1932 critical study titled D. H. Lawrence: An Unprofessional Study. Later in life, her fame spread widely with the publication of her diaries starting in 1960, and she was named a finalist for the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1976.

Shaping Her Mind and Art

Her perspective was shaped by her complex relationships and her deep involvement with psychoanalysis. In the 1930s, she studied psychoanalysis in Paris under René Allendy and Otto Rank, both of whom became her lovers. Rank helped her navigate the space between her unarticulated feelings and the written word, prompting her to search for a language of intuition and instinct. Her relationships with her husbands, Hugh Parker Guiler and Rupert Pole, as well as her affair with writer Henry Miller, further influenced her thoughts and writing. Additionally, her trilingual background allowed her to choose the language that best expressed her ideas, viewing French as the language of her heart, Spanish as the language of her ancestors, and English as the language of her intellect.

A Lasting Voice

Today, Nin's writing continues to attract readers because of her rare ability to articulate the subtle, wordless transitions of human feeling. Her diaries provide a valuable counterbalancing female perspective on a historically male-dominated creative world. Her words remind readers of the strength required to live an authentic, expressive life. As she famously observed, "Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage." Through her brave exploration of intimacy, psychoanalysis, and art, Nin demonstrated how a person can expand their world by having the courage to speak their own truth.
