About this quote
The line points out how spectacle loses its power after you’ve seen the same stunt too many times. When surprise turns to shrug, your standards are doing the talking. Ask whether you’re bored because the show is empty or because you’ve been overstimulated. If it’s the latter, step back and reset; if it’s the former, call out the hollow flash.
When to use it
- At a product demo in work: “Well, don’t expect us to be too impressed. We just saw Finnick Odair in his underwear,” I said after the overhyped features tour.
- After a student presents a flashy slide deck with no substance: “Don’t brag yet—well, don’t expect us to be too impressed. We just saw Finnick Odair in his underwear.”
- At a family reunion when someone makes a big show of a tiny favor: “Okay. Don’t expect us to be too impressed. We just saw Finnick Odair in his underwear.”
- In the locker room when a player tries to wow everyone with a staged celebration: “Yeah, don’t expect us to be too impressed. We just saw Finnick Odair in his underwear.”
