About Trisha Yearwood
Patricia Lynn Yearwood, known professionally as Trisha Yearwood, was born on September 19, 1964, in Monticello, Georgia. She grew up the daughter of schoolteacher Gwendolyn Yearwood and local banker Jack Howard Yearwood, in a setting where school, church, and community life gave her early places to sing. From a young age, she took part in talent shows, church events, and musicals, building the confidence and discipline that later carried her into country music.
After graduating from Piedmont Academy in Monticello in 1982, Yearwood studied business for two years at Young Harris College and received an associate degree. She then attended the University of Georgia for one semester before leaving, and in 1985 moved to Nashville, Tennessee. There she enrolled in Belmont College and pursued a music business degree. Her path into the industry began behind the scenes through an internship at MTM Records, where she was later hired full time, recorded demo tapes, and sang background vocals for new artists.
One of those artists was Garth Brooks, who became a friend and promised to help her find a recording contract if his own career succeeded. Brooks introduced her to producer Allen Reynolds, who brought her to producer Garth Fundis. Fundis and Yearwood worked together on a demo tape, and in 1990 she sang background vocals on Brooks’s second album, No Fences. After MCA Records producer Tony Brown heard her perform at a label event, he helped her sign with the label. She soon opened for Brooks on his 1991 nationwide tour.
Yearwood rose to fame in 1991 with her debut single, “She’s in Love with the Boy,” which reached number one on the Billboard country singles chart. Her self-titled debut album sold over two million copies, and she became the first female country artist to sell a million copies of a debut album. Through the early and mid-1990s, she built a run of major country hits, including “The Woman Before Me,” “Walkaway Joe,” “The Song Remembers When,” “XXX’s and OOO’s (An American Girl),” and “Believe Me Baby (I Lied).” Her 1992 album Hearts in Armor, shaped by emotional conflicts after her divorce from Chris Latham, included collaborations with Don Henley, Emmylou Harris, and Raul Malo.
Her 1997 single “How Do I Live” reached number two on the U.S. country singles chart and found international success. It appeared on (Songbook) A Collection of Hits, which was certified quadruple-platinum in the United States and included “In Another’s Eyes” and “Perfect Love.” More commercial successes followed, including “There Goes My Baby” and “I Would’ve Loved You Anyway.” In 2005, her tenth studio album, Jasper County, debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and in the top 10 of the Billboard 200. In 2007, she signed with Big Machine Records and released Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love.
Yearwood later stepped back from her own music career for a time to focus on other projects. She published three successful cookbooks that appeared on The New York Times Best Seller list, and in 2012 began the Food Network series Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, which later won a Daytime Emmy Award. She has sold more than 15 million records worldwide, earned three Grammy Awards, three Academy of Country Music awards, and three Country Music Association awards, and has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1999. Since 2005, she has been married to Garth Brooks, with whom she has collaborated many times. Her work still draws people because it joins craft, plainspoken feeling, and a voice shaped by both ambition and lived experience.
