Robert Collier

Robert James-Collier, born on 23 September 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester, is a British actor known to many viewers as Rob James-Collier. He was born Robert James Collier to James and Anne Collier, and later changed the shape of his professional name by hyphenating his middle name and surname. The change was made to comply with Equity rules and to avoid confusion with another actor named Robert Collier. That practical adjustment became the name under which he built a steady career across British television, film, and drama.

James-Collier was educated at St Patrick's Roman Catholic High School in Eccles, Greater Manchester. Before acting became his work, he studied business at the University of Huddersfield, earning a bachelor's degree, and later gained a master's degree in marketing at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. Those details give his early life a grounded, non-theatrical shape. He did not enter the profession through years of formal acting experience. Instead, with no acting experience, he auditioned for the series Down to Earth. Ricky Tomlinson and Denise Welch were convinced by his talent, and he won the part of the womanising pub landlord.

His screen career gathered pace in 2006. He appeared in New Street Law and had a small part as “Stud” in series 3, episode 5 of Shameless, under the name Rob Collier. That same year he joined Coronation Street as Liam Connor, joint owner of the Underworld factory. He left the show in October 2008, after the character was set to be killed off in a murder-mystery plotline. The role brought him major attention and several awards, including “Best Newcomer” and “Sexiest Male” at the 2007 Inside Soap Awards, the British Soap Awards’ Sexiest Male award in 2007 and 2008, and “Best Exit” at the 2009 British Soap Awards.

International audiences came to know James-Collier through Downton Abbey, where he played Thomas Barrow, the scheming and lonely gay footman who later became under-butler. He appeared in the historical drama series from 2010 to 2015, then continued in the franchise’s feature films: Downton Abbey in 2019, Downton Abbey: A New Era in 2022, and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale in 2025. The part remains one of his best-known roles, giving him a place in one of the most widely recognized British period dramas of its era.

James-Collier’s later work has kept him moving across genres. He played Kevin O'Dowd in ITV’s 2016 crime drama The Level, starred in the 2017 British horror film The Ritual, and had a principal role in the “Cold River” episode of Vera, aired in 2018. In 2019, he was announced for the third series of Channel 4’s school drama Ackley Bridge as Martin Evershed. In 2023, he appeared in Channel 5’s The Inheritance, and in 2025 starred as DC Ben Cooper in Cooper & Fry. His career resonates because it shows a performer moving from an unexpected start into roles that viewers remember, bringing presence to soaps, period drama, crime stories, and film.
