About Paul Walker

Paul William Walker IV was an American actor whose career stretched from childhood television work in the 1980s to global action stardom in the 2000s and early 2010s. He was born on September 12, 1973, in Glendale, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, and spent most of his early life in the Sunland neighborhood. Raised in the Mormon religion, he grew up with four younger siblings: Aimee, Ashlie, Caleb, and Cody. He graduated from Village Christian School in 1991 and later attended several community colleges in Southern California, majoring in marine biology.

Walker entered show business very young. He began modeling as a toddler and appeared in a Pampers television commercial at age two. By 1984, he was appearing in commercials such as one for Showbiz Pizza, and that same year he began acting on television in CBS Schoolbreak Special. He worked steadily on television through 1996, with appearances in Highway to Heaven, Throb, Charles in Charge, Who’s the Boss?, What a Dummy, and Touched by an Angel. In 1993, he played Brandon Collins on The Young and the Restless, a role that brought him wider attention and a Youth in Film Awards nomination alongside co-star Heather Tom.

His film career began in 1986 with the horror comedy Monster in the Closet, followed by the science fiction film The Retaliator. In the 1990s, Walker moved from low-budget films toward more visible supporting parts. After Tammy and the T-Rex in 1994 and Meet the Deedles in 1998, he appeared in Pleasantville, Varsity Blues, She’s All That, and The Skulls. His performances in Varsity Blues and She’s All That, both released in 1999, helped make him a familiar face to audiences at the end of that decade.

Walker became best known for playing Brian O’Conner in the Fast & Furious franchise. His breakthrough came opposite Vin Diesel in The Fast and the Furious in 2001, a commercially successful film that launched a larger media franchise and made Walker a leading man. He shared the 2002 MTV Movie Award for Best On-Screen Team with Diesel. He returned as Brian in 2 Fast 2 Furious in 2003, then again in Fast & Furious in 2009 after six years away from the role. He also appeared in the fifth and sixth installments, which were commercially successful, and won another MTV Movie Award for Best On-Screen Duo with Diesel for the sixth film.

Outside that franchise, Walker starred in the road thriller Joy Ride in 2001, the survival drama Eight Below in 2006, and Clint Eastwood’s war film Flags of Our Fathers the same year, in which he portrayed Hank Hansen. He also appeared in Into the Blue, Running Scared, Takers, The Lazarus Project, and other action and thriller films. He worked as a producer as well, debuting in that role with The Death and Life of Bobby Z in 2007 and later producing Vehicle 19 and Pawn Shop Chronicles.

Walker’s life was cut short on November 30, 2013, when he died as a passenger in a single-vehicle collision involving a speeding Porsche Carrera GT. At the time, he had not finished filming Furious 7, which was later completed with rewrites and stand-ins, including his brothers Cody and Caleb. The song “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth was commissioned as a tribute. For many readers, a line such as “Train your mind to see the good in everything” fits the warmth fans still associate with him: simple, direct, and hopeful.
