About Nicky Gumbel
Nicky Gumbel is an English Anglican priest and author in the evangelical and charismatic traditions, best known as the developer and public face of the Alpha Course. Born Nicholas Glyn Paul Gumbel on 28 April 1955 in London, he became closely associated with Holy Trinity Brompton in Knightsbridge, a Church of England parish in the Diocese of London. He served there for many years and was vicar from 2005 to 2022.
Gumbel’s background joined law, faith, and a complicated European family history. His father, Walter Gumbel, was a German secular Jew from Stuttgart whose licence to practise law was withdrawn in one of the early Nazi purges. Walter emigrated to Britain and became a successful barrister. Gumbel’s mother, Muriel, was also a barrister and a nominal Christian. Nicky was educated at Hill House School, Eton College, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he studied law and graduated with a BA in 1976, later promoted to an MA in the university’s tradition.
While at university, Gumbel converted to Christianity in 1974. He also attended the Iwerne holiday camps founded by E. J. “Bash” Nash, evangelical Christian camps aimed at boys from English public schools and designed to prepare them for future ministry at the highest level in the church. After revelations of sexual and physical abuse perpetrated by John Smyth at these camps, Gumbel gradually distanced himself from Iwerne. In later editions of his 2011 book Bible in One Year, he replaced a eulogy to Nash with the same eulogy addressed to John Collins.
After Cambridge, Gumbel followed his father into the law and became a practising barrister. At the same time, he became a regular worshipper at Holy Trinity Brompton. In January 1978, he married at the church, and he and his wife Pippa went on to have three children. In 1982, he announced that he would leave the bar to train for ordination in the Church of England. He began theological studies at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, in 1983, graduated in 1986, was ordained deacon that year, and became a priest in 1987.
Gumbel’s name is most closely tied to Alpha. The course had been running at Holy Trinity Brompton since 1977, and in 1990 he took over its leadership. Under him, it changed from a course designed for new Christians into one aimed mainly at people outside the church who would not consider themselves Christians. In 1996, the Bishop of London appointed him Alpha chaplain, while he remained at HTB as a curate. His books linked to Alpha include Questions of Life, which has sold more than 1,000,000 copies, was voted Christian Book of the Year in 1994, and has been published in 48 languages. Other related titles include Why Jesus, Searching Issues, Telling Others, A Life Worth Living, Challenging Lifestyle, Heart of Revival, and 30 Days.
Gumbel received an honorary doctorate from the University of Gloucestershire in 2007 for his broad contribution to the wider church through Alpha, and he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to the Church of England. His words continue to appeal because they are direct, hopeful, and practical. “Let your dreams be bigger than your fears, your actions louder than your words, and your faith stronger than your feelings” fits the plain emphasis of his public work: belief made accessible, and faith expressed in everyday life.
