About Nick Jonas
Nicholas Jerry Jonas, born September 16, 1992, in Dallas, Texas, is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. He grew up in Wyckoff, New Jersey, the third son of Denise Jonas, a former sign language teacher and singer, and Paul Kevin Jonas, a songwriter, musician, and former ordained minister at an Assemblies of God church. Nick was homeschooled by his mother and raised with his brothers Kevin, Joe, and Frankie. His career began unusually early: at age six, he was discovered in a barber shop where his mother was getting her hair cut, and by seven he was performing on Broadway.
Those first years gave Jonas a grounding in both music and stage work. He played roles including Tiny Tim, Chip Potts, Little Jake, and Gavroche, and while appearing in Beauty and the Beast in 2002, he wrote “Joy to the World (A Christmas Prayer)” with his father. The song, featuring background vocals from fellow cast members, appeared on Broadway’s Greatest Gifts: Carols for a Cure, Vol. 4 and was later released to Christian radio in 2003 as his debut single. Columbia Records took notice, and a solo album, Nicholas Jonas, received a limited release in 2004 before a wider release was canceled.
The next turn came when Columbia executive Steve Greenberg heard “Please Be Mine” and chose to sign Nick with his older brothers as a group. After considering the name Sons of Jonas, they became the Jonas Brothers. Their debut album, It’s About Time, arrived in 2006 after delays and limited label support. Around this same period, Nick was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 13. The band’s early work included touring with acts such as Jump5, Kelly Clarkson, Jesse McCartney, the Backstreet Boys, and The Click Five, as well as appearances on Disney Channel-related soundtracks.
The Jonas Brothers broke through after signing with Hollywood Records. Their 2007 self-titled album entered the top five of the Billboard 200, and “S.O.S” became their first top twenty hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Disney Channel brought them to an even wider audience through Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream, Camp Rock in 2008, and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam in 2010. Their album A Little Bit Longer debuted at number one in 2008, and “Burnin’ Up” became their first top five hit in the United States.
Jonas also built a separate career outside the group. During a Jonas Brothers hiatus, he formed Nick Jonas & the Administration in 2010 and released one album. He later signed with Island Records and released Nick Jonas in 2014, led by “Jealous,” which reached number seven on the US Billboard Hot 100. Last Year Was Complicated followed in 2016 and peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200. The Jonas Brothers reunited in 2019, and Jonas continued solo with Spaceman in 2021, then signed with Republic Records and released Sunday Best in 2026. As an actor, he appeared in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level, Chaos Walking, and Power Ballad, and on television in Kingdom and Scream Queens. From Broadway child performer to pop star, actor, and bandmate, his words carry the plain force of a life spent singing, writing, and performing in public from childhood onward.
