Johnny Depp

John Christopher Depp II, born June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky, is an American actor, musician, and filmmaker. The youngest of four children, he grew up in a family that moved often before settling in Miramar, Florida, in 1970. His parents divorced when he was 15, and his mother later married Robert Palmer, whom Depp has called “an inspiration.” Music came early: his mother gave him a guitar when he was 12, and by his teens he was playing in bands.

Depp left Miramar High School at 16 in 1979 to become a rock musician. When he tried to return two weeks later, the principal told him to follow his dream of music. In 1980, he began playing with The Kids, a band that found modest local success in Florida and then moved to Los Angeles in search of a record deal, later changing its name to Six Gun Method. Depp also worked odd jobs, including telemarketing. The band split before signing a record deal in 1984, but music stayed with him throughout his career.

Acting began almost by accident. After Depp moved to Los Angeles, his then-wife Lori Anne Allison introduced him to Nicolas Cage, who advised him to pursue acting. From the 1990s onward, Depp became known for often playing eccentric characters. His lead roles included Arizona Dream, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, and Benny & Joon in 1993, followed by Dead Man, Donnie Brasco, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Ninth Gate, Chocolat, and Blow. He also built a long collaboration with director Tim Burton, beginning with Edward Scissorhands in 1990 and continuing through films including Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows.

Depp reached worldwide stardom as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series from 2003 to 2017. He received Academy Award nominations for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Finding Neverland, and Sweeney Todd, and his honors include a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, an Honorary César, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999. He founded the production company Infinitum Nihil in 2004 and formed the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry. In 2022, he won a defamation case against Amber Heard, a highly publicized case that sparked wide debate. For a quotes audience, Depp’s words often speak to persistence under pressure. “Breathe.
