Jay Asher

Jay Asher is an American writer and novelist who became a prominent figure in twenty-first-century young-adult literature. Born in Arcadia, California, on September 30, 1975, Asher is half Jewish. He grew up in California and attended Cuesta Community College before enrolling at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. During his junior year, he chose to leave his university studies behind to fully focus on his goal of becoming a writer.

Early Career and Creative Roots

Success did not arrive immediately. Asher spent years trying to kick-start a career writing children's picture books. To support himself, he worked a series of ordinary jobs. He spent his time working at a shoe store, a trophy shop, libraries, and bookstores. These diverse workplaces and his constant contact with books helped shape his perspective on storytelling. On September 7, 2002, he married Joan Marie, and they settled in California, where he continued to write.

Bestselling Success and Lasting Words

Asher is best known for his 2007 New York Times bestselling young-adult novel, Thirteen Reasons Why. The book tells the story of Hannah Baker, a girl who dies by suicide and leaves behind audio tapes explaining her decision to her classmates. The novel won several awards and earned a five-star rating from Teen Book Review, alongside high praise from authors Ellen Hopkins, Sherman Alexie, Chris Crutcher, and Gordon Korman. On March 31, 2017, Netflix released a highly popular series based on the novel, with Selena Gomez serving as executive producer. Asher also published other books, including The Future of Us in 2011, What Light in 2016, and the 2017 graphic novel Piper.
