About Henry Cavill

Henry William Dalgliesh Cavill, born on 5 May 1983 in Saint Helier, Jersey, is a British actor whose career has moved through period television, superhero films, fantasy drama, mystery, and spy action. The fourth of five boys in a Catholic family, he grew up in the Channel Islands before studying at St Michael’s Preparatory School in Saint Saviour and then at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire. His mother, Marianne, worked as a bank secretary and has Scottish, English, and Irish heritage; his father, Colin, was a former stockbroker from Chester, England.

At Stowe, Cavill’s interests already pointed in two directions that would follow him into public life: sport and performance. He played field hockey for the 1st XI and rugby for the 3rd XV, while also taking part in school drama. In 1999, he portrayed a member of the T-Birds in a school production of Grease and took the lead role in Dogg’s Hamlet, staged by his Grafton house for an intra-school drama festival. In 2000, while playing rugby, the 16-year-old Cavill met Russell Crowe, who was filming Proof of Life at Stowe. Crowe shared acting tips and later sent him a package. Years later, the two worked together on Man of Steel.

Cavill began his film career with Laguna in 2001 and appeared in Kevin Reynolds’ adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo in 2002. That same year he made his television debut in The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, followed by the television film Goodbye, Mr. Chips and later appearances in Midsomer Murders, I Capture the Castle, Hellraiser: Hellworld, Red Riding Hood, Tristan & Isolde, and Stardust. From 2007 to 2010, he played Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, in Showtime’s The Tudors, a role that brought critical acclaim and a wider audience. Cavill credited the series with helping his career, saying, “It’s done the most for me to date.”

His best-known role arrived when he was cast as Clark Kent and Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, announced on 30 January 2011 and released in 2013. Cavill said he was “honoured to be a part of his return to the big screen,” and he went on to reprise the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 and Justice League in 2017. He also appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, released on HBO Max in March 2021 after a fan campaign, and made cameo appearances connected to the role in Black Adam in 2022 and The Flash in 2023.

Alongside Superman, Cavill built a career in action, fantasy, and mystery roles. He played Theseus in Immortals, Napoleon Solo in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., August Walker in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and starred in Night Hunter. From 2019 to 2023, he played Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher. He has also appeared as Sherlock Holmes in the Enola Holmes film series and as Gus March-Phillipps in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, with Argylle among his 2024 credits. His words still resonate because they often meet fame with clear gratitude, especially when he speaks about the roles that opened the next door.
