About Gerard Way

Gerard Arthur Way, born April 9, 1977, in Summit, New Jersey, is an American singer, songwriter, and comic book writer. Raised in Belleville with his brother Mikey Way, he grew up between music, drawing, and performance. His maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, taught him to sing, paint, and perform from a young age, and he later said she “taught me everything I know.” In elementary school, he first sang publicly as Peter Pan in a school musical, while Bon Jovi helped form his early love of music.

Way came of age in the 1990s, graduating from Belleville High School in 1995 and then studying at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999. He originally wanted to work in comics, and he also wanted to be a guitarist. His grandmother bought him his first guitar when he was eight, and as a teenager he and Mikey were influenced by artists including Iron Maiden, The Misfits, Danzig, Black Flag, Queen, Pulp, Blur, Morrissey, and The Smiths. After short-lived bands and setbacks as a guitarist, he focused more closely on art.

My Chemical Romance grew out of a sharp change in Way’s life. He was working as an intern for Cartoon Network in New York City during the September 11, 2001 attacks, and seeing their effects first-hand changed how he thought about his future. To help deal with the emotional impact, he wrote the lyrics to “Skylines and Turnstiles,” which became the first song by My Chemical Romance. With Gerard Way as lead vocalist and co-founder, and Mikey Way later as bassist, the band became what he is best known for. They announced their break up on March 22, 2013.

Way’s music was closely tied to the pressures and losses in his own life. In interviews, he said music and artwork were effective outlets during long battles with depression, alcoholism, and prescription drug abuse. He also wrote deeply personal songs such as “Helena,” in memory of his late grandmother. His creative life was never limited to one form. He co-created and wrote The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and The Umbrella Academy, the latter later adapted into a popular Netflix series that ran for four seasons. He also founded DC Comics’ Young Animal imprint and wrote its flagship series, Doom Patrol.

After My Chemical Romance’s breakup, Way released his debut solo album, Hesitant Alien, on September 30, 2014, after signing to Warner Bros. Records as a solo artist. He said he chose to bring Britpop into his music because he enjoyed the energy and style of the music and its scene, and wanted to revive aspects of it in America. In later years he released singles including “Baby You’re a Haunted House,” “Getting Down the Germs,” and “Dasher,” and recorded covers connected to The Umbrella Academy. My Chemical Romance announced a reunion on October 31, 2019, with a Los Angeles date and later tour plans.

Way’s words still connect because they come from a life shaped by art, shock, grief, fear, and the need to make something useful from pain. At 15, he was held at gunpoint, yet he later said that no matter how ugly the world gets, he still had faith in it. That mix of darkness and belief runs through his songs, comics, and public voice. A line like “One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching” fits the same plain-spoken urgency: life can be frightening and brief, so make it vivid, honest, and your own.
