About Denis Waitley
Denis E. Waitley was an American motivational speaker, writer, and consultant whose work reached a large audience through books and audio programs. Born on June 6, 1933, in San Diego, California, he came of age in a working family. His mother worked in a factory, and his father worked in a warehouse after serving during World War II. When Waitley was ten, his parents divorced, and he had little contact with his father after that.
Waitley attended the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, where he received a Bachelor of Science. After graduation, he became a naval aviator. That training placed him in a disciplined, high-pressure environment before he moved into civilian work. After leaving the navy, he became a financial public relations representative for an electronics company. Later, Jonas Salk offered him a job as a fundraiser at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
He became best known for The Psychology of Winning, an audio program whose beginnings were modest. In 1976, Waitley recorded some of the audiotape at a local church. Released in 1978, the program went on to sell more than 2 million copies and generate $100 million in sales. He was recognized as the best-selling author of that audio series, and he was also known for books such as Seeds of Greatness and The Winner’s Edge.
From the 1980s through the 2000s, Waitley released more than 15 books, including Seeds of Greatness, The Winner’s Edge, Empires of the Mind, The New Dynamics of Winning, Being the Best, and The Joy of Working. In all, he authored 16 books and released more than 10 best-selling audio programs. He was inducted into the International Speakers’ Hall of Fame, was a founding member of the National Council for Self-Esteem, and served as a former chairman of psychology for the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Sports Medicine Council.
Waitley’s public record also included scrutiny. In 2007, he announced his retirement from the board of directors of Usana after the company found that, contrary to his claims, he did not hold a graduate degree from the U.S. Navy, and that his Ph.D. credentials were similarly unverifiable. Even with that episode, his best-known work continued to circulate among readers and listeners drawn to his emphasis on self-esteem, success, and action.
Waitley died on June 7, 2025, one day after his 92nd birthday. For many quote readers, his words still connect because they are direct and practical. One line often associated with him says, “Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs: the risk of doing nothing.” It fits the plain-spoken appeal of a speaker who built much of his career around the habits, attitudes, and choices people bring to their own lives.
