Chris Williamson

Christopher Williamson, born in Derby in 1956, is a British politician who represented his home city on both local and national stages. He is best known for serving as the Member of Parliament for Derby North from 2010 to 2015, and again from 2017 to 2019. During his first term in Parliament, he served as the Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government. Before his election to Westminster, Williamson spent two decades in local politics as a councillor for the Normanton ward and served two terms as the leader of Derby City Council.

From Bricklayer to Parliament

Williamson’s early life and career outside politics heavily influenced his later approach to governance. After leaving school, he worked as a craft apprentice and spent six years working as a bricklayer. He then returned to education at Leicester Polytechnic, earning a professional social work qualification in 1985. He spent several years working as a local social worker and welfare rights officer. After winning back his seat in 2017, Williamson aligned himself closely with the party's grassroots membership. He resigned from a shadow ministerial post in 2018 to speak freely on a wider range of issues, including animal rights and local government reform, and toured the country to advocate for the democratic reselection of sitting MPs.

The latter part of his time in the Labour Party was marked by severe friction. In 2019, he was suspended following comments regarding the party's response to criticisms over its handling of antisemitism. A series of legal challenges and further suspensions culminated in the party blocking him from standing as a candidate in the 2019 general election. Williamson resigned from Labour, ran unsuccessfully as an independent, and later joined the Workers Party of Britain, where he has served as a Deputy Leader since late 2023.
