Brian Dawkins

Brian Patrick Dawkins Sr., born October 13, 1973, is an American former professional football safety who played 16 seasons in the National Football League. Nicknamed “Weapon X,” he is primarily associated with the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that selected him in the second round of the 1996 NFL draft. He spent his final three seasons with the Denver Broncos, closing a career that placed him among the greatest safeties of all time.

Dawkins came out of Jacksonville, Florida, where he graduated from William M. Raines High School in 1992. He played football and basketball there, helping lead the basketball team to a Class 3A championship. He was not highly recruited as a high school football player, but Clemson University offered him a scholarship at the request of his high school teammate Patrick Sapp. At Clemson, Dawkins became a three-year starter at defensive back, finishing with 247 tackles and 11 interceptions.

His Clemson career gave early signs of the player he would become. In 1995, he earned first-team All-ACC honors, and as a senior he was selected by the Associated Press and Sporting News as a second-team All-American. His six interceptions led his team and tied for the conference lead. Clemson later named him the first-team strong safety on its all-centennial team in 1996, selected him to its Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009, and in 2013 established the Brian Dawkins Lifetime Achievement Award to honor former Clemson players for on-field performance, leadership, and community service.

Philadelphia drafted Dawkins 61st overall in 1996, using a compensatory pick received after Seth Joyner’s departure in free agency. He entered training camp as a backup free safety, but by September of his rookie season he had moved into the starting role. That year he recorded his first interception, his first sack, and a forced fumble, finishing with 75 combined tackles, three interceptions, a sack, and a forced fumble in 14 games. He also started in his first playoff game after the Eagles earned a wildcard berth.

Over time, Dawkins became viewed as the leader of the Eagles defense. He was named to nine Pro Bowls and five All-Pro teams, and he appeared in Super Bowl XXXIX. After his playing career, he returned to the Eagles as an executive of football operations for player development from 2016 to 2018, and he was with the organization when it won Super Bowl LII. In 2018, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
