Blake Lively

Blake Ellender Brown, known professionally as Blake Lively, was born on August 25, 1987, in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. She is an American actress and entrepreneur, raised in a family where entertainment was part of daily life. Her mother, Elaine Lively, worked as a talent scout, and her father, Ernie Lively, was an actor and director. Her older brother Eric and her half-siblings Lori, Robyn, and Jason have also worked in the entertainment industry.

Lively’s early training came less from a formal plan than from being close to her parents’ work. As a child, she was taken along to the acting classes they taught instead of being left with babysitters. She later said that watching them teach helped her learn the “drills” and gain confidence when she began working herself. Her professional debut came at age 10 in Sandman (1998), directed by her father, though she has described the role as a “bit part.” At first, she was not interested in acting and wanted to attend Stanford University.

At Burbank High School, where she graduated in 2005, Lively was a cheerleader, a member of the championship choir, and class president. Her older brother asked his talent agent to send her to auditions during the summer, and that led to her casting as Bridget in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005). She filmed her scenes between her junior and senior years of high school. The film became her breakthrough, and her performance earned a Teen Choice Award nomination for “Choice Movie Breakout – Female.” She returned to the role in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (2008).

Lively became widely known for playing Serena van der Woodsen in the CW teen drama Gossip Girl, based on the novel series by Cecily von Ziegesar. The series premiered in September 2007 and ran until 2012. During that period, she also appeared in New York, I Love You (2008), The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009), The Town (2010), Green Lantern (2011), and Oliver Stone’s Savages (2012). Her work in these years moved between romantic comedy, drama, thriller, and superhero film.

After Gossip Girl, Lively continued to build a film career with leading roles in The Age of Adaline (2015), The Shallows (2016), Café Society (2016), and A Simple Favor (2018), as well as its 2025 sequel. She also expanded behind the camera by directing Taylor Swift’s 2021 music video “I Bet You Think About Me.” In 2024, she produced and starred opposite Justin Baldoni in the romantic drama It Ends with Us. Her quoted line, “The best thing you can wear is confidence,” fits a career shaped by early observation, public visibility, and a steady move into new kinds of work.
