“What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy?”

About this quote
Labels do not change what violence leaves behind. A cause you admire and a cause you despise produce the same graves and the same displaced families. The point cuts against our habit of excusing harm whenever it is done in the name of something we approve of.
When to use it
- Cheering an airstrike as a clean victory while a family across the border buries their children.
- Pushing past safety rules to hit a mission-critical deadline, and someone still gets hurt.
- Backing a harsh policy because it's sold as protecting freedom, while families lose their homes.
