About this quote
A body can be fed and a person still be hollowed out. Stripping someone of freedom and the small dignities of ordinary days does a kind of damage hunger doesn't — it starves the self, not just the stomach. Which is why cages and contempt can wound deeper than any empty plate.
When to use it
- A controlling partner who tracks every move leaves someone materially comfortable but hollow.
- An overly rigid workplace that bans all autonomy drains staff who are otherwise well paid.
- An elderly parent cared for physically but never consulted about their own day slowly withdraws.
