Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly.

About this quote

Not every book deserves the same time or attention. Some you skim for pleasure, some you read fast for inspiration, and a few you need to study until they change what you do. Decide which books matter enough to take notes, test the ideas, and discuss them with others. If a book can alter your practice, slow down and work through it deliberately.

When to use it

  • Before the client pitch tomorrow, I skimmed the industry reports but chewed and digested the competitor analysis that actually shaped our slides.
  • For my literature seminar I tasted a few novels, devoured the one I loved, and chewed and digested the critical essay I used for my paper.
  • When picking parenting books, I flipped through several, tried a quick tip from one, and really chewed and digested the strategy I used for a month with my toddler.
  • Starting the side business, I sampled many blog posts, devoured a couple of how-to guides, and chewed and digested the accounting book until I could run the numbers myself.
