About this quote

Entitlement without contribution rings hollow. The moral logic pairs every legitimate claim with a task already carried out: you earn a say in something by shouldering your share of it first, not by demanding what you never helped build or maintain.

When to use it

  • A resident pushing the council for a cleaner park after showing up to weekend cleanups themselves
  • An employee expecting a promotion only once they've reliably delivered the work the role requires
  • A tenant asking for repairs while keeping their own rent and shared spaces in good order
