Resist much, obey little.

About this quote

Think of a quick rule you can use when pressure rises: question orders and protect your standards. Saying no to small compromises keeps you capable of saying no to bigger ones later. Start by naming one value you will not trade this week and practice that boundary out loud. Expect pushback; firmness makes other people adjust, not you.

When to use it

  • At work, when a manager asks you to 'massage' the numbers to hit a target, say, 'I won't change the facts; let's find another solution.'
  • In a study group where someone pressures you to share answers, tell them, 'I can't do that — I want to earn my grade honestly.'
  • With family, if relatives push you to apologize for something you didn't do, respond, 'I understand you want peace, but I won't take blame for that.'
  • On a sports team when a coach suggests covering up an injury to play, say, 'My health is nonnegotiable; I can't risk long-term damage.'
