“Now what state do you live in?”

About this quote
We often get so caught up in our daily routines that we forget to check our mental geography. Are you residing in a place of constant anxiety, or are you actually present in your current surroundings? It is easy to confuse your physical address with your emotional reality. Take a hard look at where your thoughts spend most of their time. Changing your actual location does nothing if you carry the same heavy state of mind with you everywhere.
When to use it
- Your coworker is physically sitting at their desk but staring blankly into space, completely consumed by worry about next week's presentation. You ask them this to gently break their trance and bring them back to the room.
- Your teenager is sulking through a beautiful family vacation because they are obsessed with some minor online drama. You use this question to playfully mock their dramatic, gloomy mood.
- You catch yourself doomscrolling on the couch for two hours instead of going for a walk. You say this out loud to yourself to snap out of the digital haze and get moving.
