I do regard Islam to be a religion of peace in the same sense as Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism are.

About this quote

The fair move is to extend another's faith the same good will you would want for your own — judging a tradition by its teachings and its best followers, not by whoever behaves worst in its name. Do otherwise and you would have to condemn every religion, including yours.

When to use it

  • Defending a coworker's religion when others reduce it to a stereotype.
  • Reading a faith's actual texts before forming an opinion about it.
  • Refusing to blame a whole community for the actions of a few.
