I care for myself. The more solitary, the more friendless, the more unsustained I am, the more I will respect myself.

About this quote

Self-respect can grow when outside approval disappears. Isolation strips away the distractions and shows which habits you keep for other people and which you keep for yourself. Notice one small thing you can do today to prove you matter to you — keep a promise, refuse one extra favor, or rest when you need to. Do that again tomorrow and you will start to trust your own standards.

When to use it

  • After my proposal was ignored in a meeting at work, I told myself I care for myself and stopped checking messages after 7 pm.
  • Coming out of surgery, I chose quiet recovery over hosting visitors and repeated the line to hold my boundary.
  • When my parents pushed me to take the job they wanted, I said no and reminded myself I respect myself before making any decision.
  • Training alone for a weekend race, I used the line to keep running when my usual partners dropped out and stayed on my plan.
