“Do what is right, not what is easy nor what is popular.”

About this quote
Shortcuts look good in the moment, but they often create bigger problems down the road. When you face pressure to pick the easy or popular choice, take a breath and name the real cost. Write down what you’d lose by taking that shortcut and what you’ll gain by holding your standard. It will feel lonely sometimes. Are you willing to stand by that choice when no one else does?
When to use it
- At a quarterly review where my manager suggested we massage the numbers to meet targets, I told myself to do what is right and refused to sign off.
- During finals when classmates offered to share answers, I said no and focused on my own work, remembering that line.
- As a youth coach, I made a player practice proper form instead of the flashy shortcut that would hurt them later, even though the crowd wanted the quick score.
- When relatives pushed me to take the safer, high-status job, I paused, listed what I'd give up, and chose the harder route that fit my values.
